TROC BAND LEADER DECLARES WAR ON DULL AND LOUD NYE CELEBRATIONS

Edmonton (GC): George Carmichael, the current leader of the world renowned Trocadero Orchestra, has declared an end to boring New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“After two years of sitting at home, watching the terrible NYE celebrations on the TV,” says Carmichael, “... I just can’t sit back and watch this special night turn into another tasteless excuse to scream really loud and wave toques over your head”.

Carmichael believes in tradition. For years, the Trocadero Orchestra has been a permanent date on Albertans’ calendars for December 31st. The tradition goes back to 1946, with the grand opening of the Trocadero Ballroom in downtown Edmonton.

“The past two years,” he says, “‘the Troc’ has been ‘dark’.” The costs to host the event at hotels have become prohibitive, according to the band leader. “The price per plate has become outrageous, and our patrons aren’t terribly thrilled with the inflated prices for the drinks, either.”

No more. The Trocadero Orchestra has vowed to return Glenn Miller, Guy Lombardo, and Benny Goodman to their rightful place on New Year’s Eve.

“Three hundred dollars for a couple,” he asserts, “to hear a disk jockey in a hotel is an insult to the evening. Ditto with small live combos who claim they can do justice to big band classics, like In the Mood – they can’t!”

Next year will be different. The 18–piece Trocadero Orchestra is back. “It’s time for Edmonton to shelve their toques and mitts, take out their earplugs, and get their tuxes and evening gowns out.”

The event will be hosted at the Al Shamal Shriner’s Centre, on 142 street, north of 137th avenue.

At $110 per person, the celebration is a deal, according to Carmichael. The venue for December 31, 2010, makes that reasonable price possible. “There will still be a fabulous buffet dinner, and champagne at midnight, but there will also be enough money left in your pocket to call a cab home.” There is ample free parking, which is a bonus.

Tickets for the event are now on sale, online, at www.trocadero.ca. You can also order tickets for two other events: an afternoon event (February 14th), and a late spring evening dance (June 12). Those events are also being hosted at the Shriner’s Hall. “That will give our fans a great warm-up before the NYE event,” says the confident band leader.
